Biggest cause of grease fires is not using proper appliance: firefighter

In the last 45 days, the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department has responded to three preventable fires caused by hot grease that burst into flames, says Lieut. Ray McCaskill.

“It’s basically been the same problem – grease fires,” he said.

“We want to remind the general public of the proper way of doing it. The biggest problem is not using the proper appliance to cook with grease.”

McCaskill said cooking with grease is one of the top-three causes of residential fires in Canada, and noted that within seconds, hot oil can explode into flames.

“There are deep fryers that are thermostatically controlled and then it doesn’t typically happen,” he said.

“But in most cases, while using a pot or frying pan, it’s left unattended. The oil gets too hot and catches fire. Oil heats up very quickly and it has to be watched.”

If the doorbell or telephone rings, McCaskill suggested the heat be turned off and the pot covered before leaving the room.

Grease fires happen when a collection of oil or grease on a stove, oven or fryer gets hot enough to ignite.

“We suggest if people are using a pot or frying pan to cook with grease that they have a lid for it handy and not leave it unattended at all, even when in the kitchen,” McCaskill said.

“If a fire starts on the stove or in a pot or pan, the best way to extinguish it is to cover it or smother it out with a metal lid.”

McCaskill said a glass lid is likely to break or crack under extreme heat, and he advised to never put water on the flames.

He also warned: “Do not move the pot. Being a liquid, oil splashes back and forth and someone could get a very serious burn.”

A dry chemical fire extinguisher will also work, McCaskill said, adding it would also contaminate the kitchen and food.

What’s new in 3-D TVs, smart appliances and more

Televisions with three-dimensional eye-popping visuals felt like a fleeting trend in 2010, reserved for gearheads who didn’t mind shelling out a 20 percent markup over regular flat-panel televisions.

Another hurdle for 3-D TVs was the requisite active-shutter glasses that black out alternating eyes at a rate of 120 times per second — so fast they can deliver a different image to each eye without you even realizing it. The problem is these glasses can cost $100 or more per pair, are heavy, require batteries and have been known to induce wooziness and eye strain.

But if the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show, which took place this month in Las Vegas, is any indication, 3-D TV retains the status of The Next Big Thing.

Empower Your Appliances with the Smart Grid

The manager of the energy portfolio for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory discusses the benefits of evening out our day’s use of electricity and how future appliances will decide when they can spark up most cheaply.

Despite strong financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy and increasing utility interest, smart grid remains a blurry concept among electricity consumers. That it could transform how we use energy and usher in an era where the term “peak load” — its nemesis — is relegated to similar obscurity.
The smart grid overlays advanced information technologies on the electrical grid, allowing consumers to use energy in ways or at times that avoids drawing power at peak-load times and decreases use overall.

Philips has kick-started what could be a consolidation drive in the highly fragmented small kitchen appliance business in the country. Preethi has sales of around Rs 400-450 crore or about $100 million as per reports. Although the deal value stands undisclosed, the Dutch firm could be paying around Rs 400 crore for the buyout of the privately held firm, as per VCCircle estimates. The closest listed peer for Preethi would be Bajaj Electricals whose market cap is roughly as much as its revenues.

Energy management software company Tendril and appliance maker Whirlpool Corporation announced a relationship for smart home appliances in the U.S.

Tendril will provide the back-end technology infrastructure to support the commercial deployment of smart appliances, including a range of connectivity-enabled services and applications. Whirlpool Corporation will integrate its smart appliances with the Smart Grid infrastructure by extending Tendril’s open standards-based, scalable and secure technology platform.

The integrated platform will enable communication between appliances, consumers and energy providers–making the connected home and home energy management a reality.

For example, for a refrigerator to actively manage its energy consumption, it must be able to quickly, reliably and seamlessly communicate with the electric utility company. In this case, the refrigerator will automatically move its defrost cycle to a non-peak time without impacting the performance of the appliance.

GE Enters Appliance Recycling Partnership

General Electric aims to cool global warming by minimizing the waste of discarded refrigerators. On Tuesday, GE became the first appliance maker to sign on to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s voluntary Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program.

According to GE, 9 million refrigerators are trashed in the U.S. each year. The appliances are usually torn apart to reclaim only the metal, leaving the insulating foam to go to the landfill, emitting greenhouse gases and other environmentally harmful substances in the process.

As part of partnership, GE will work with Appliance Recycling Centers of America to reclaim 95% of the insulating foam, resulting in an 85% reduction in the typical landfill waste of a used refrigerator, GE said in a statement.

Number, color of appliances matters

It’s not actually a newly built house, just a new house as far as I am concerned. I lived at my previous address for 17 years, which is actually the longest stint I had lived anywhere. During the move, I learned that my wife could be a candidate for the television show Hoarders. I will not move again.

There are many aspects about the new house that appeal to our family. There is a little more room so it’s very easy for the kids to have more friends over, it’s in a neighborhood where other children live (our previous home was between a hospital and a university, a very busy street void of children), and it has a new kitchen.
